Mr Tang (Xiao Tang, @chuanminhtang on TikTok) is a street-food cook from Nanchong, Sichuan, who works a griddle on the sidewalks of Los Angeles. Every week he hands out hundreds of free jiangxiang bing - golden savoury Chinese flatbread - to homeless and low-income neighbours in some of LA's poorest districts. He speaks little English and works through a translation app; he was detained by police in 2025 in a dispute over street-vending rules, and he has said he wants to one day run for Mayor of Los Angeles. Grateful people on Skid Row have called him 'President'. LA County counted about 72,000 homeless residents in 2025 - roughly 43,600 of them inside the city itself. One hot jiangxiang bing will not end that, but on the street it means someone saw you, today. Your sponsorship covers a full griddle session: flour, savoury bean sauce, spring onions, sesame, cooking oil and gas for roughly 20 jiangxiang bing handed out free on the street - about 25 pence per jiangxiang bing. Mr Tang keeps no cut: every penny of this tier buys ingredients. Sponsor a batch today and we will report back on the shop page with how many meals your batch funded. Entry: GBP 5.00 per batch of 20 jiangxiang bing. HELP THE POORS raises funds for street kitchens like Mr Tang's and for direct relief of people in poverty.
