WHY WE EXIST. The pattern repeats in every town in Britain. The marriage ends and the machine takes over: the house, the savings and often the pension are transferred or charged to keep 'the children's home' running - and the father is converted overnight from a parent into a paycheque with a postcode he no longer lives at. In contested child arrangements, residence overwhelmingly ends up with the mother, and a father who struggles with that outcome is handed an enforcement battle that can swallow years. Mark Harris spent a decade trying to see his daughters through the family courts and was jailed for persisting - his case helped launch Fathers 4 Justice, and there are thousands like him who never made the news. The numbers behind the pattern are stark: 87% of people sleeping rough in Britain are men, and relationship breakdown is the most common trigger of first homelessness; three in four suicides are men; separated men under 35 are more than eight times more likely to die by suicide than married men the same age. A court that takes a man's home and children rarely asks, six months later, whether he still has a roof or a reason to get up.
