Flour Power Saturday - Fund a Week of Batter
Every morning before most of the city stirs, Mr Tang lights his griddle. On street corners around Los Angeles - and most famously outside the shelters of Skid Row - he hands out fresh jiangxiang bing, the golden Chinese street flatbread he grew up making, to anyone who is hungry and cannot pay. He does not means-test, he does not preach, and he has never charged a cent. His story travelled from TikTok to the Chinese press, and it comes down to one sentence: a man who saw hunger and answered it with dough. But free food is not free to make. The kitchen's single biggest weekly bill is the flour itself. This opening Saturday of our ten-week Griddle season funds the whole week's raw materials: 60 kg of flour, 600 eggs, cooking oil, scallions, sauce and the gas that keeps the griddle hot. In round numbers, every £5 entry buys the ingredients for about ten hot jiangxiang bing. Three hundred of us together fund the entire week. Join us live from the street kitchen: Mr Tang fires the first jiangxiang bing of the season on camera, we walk through the week's shopping list receipt by receipt, and we open the season's donation wall - every name on it goes onto the kitchen cart where the queue can read it. He feeds people every single day. He just needs the week's flour. Give him the flour.
