Lantern Night Feed - An Evening on the Street

Halloween night, when the city spends on costumes and sweets, is also the first genuinely cold Saturday of the season for the people on its streets. Soup kitchens close early on holidays. The shelters are full by six. The street at nine at night is the loneliest place in the city, so that is exactly where the kitchen will be. The Lantern Night Feed is an evening service: battery lanterns strung along the cart, the griddle glowing under them, two hundred hot evening meals - a heartier jianbing folded double with egg and extra filling - plus thermos refills of hot tea carried up and down the block to the people who cannot join the queue. Each £6 entry funds three lantern-lit evening meals plus the tea run. This week's budget also replaces the kitchen's failing battery lanterns with winter-grade ones that last the whole dark season - every entry contributes to that kit. At the session we light the first lantern on camera, tell the story of the block's longest resident (a man who has watched twenty Halloweens from the same doorway), and keep a candle lit on the donation wall for every entry received. While the city parties, someone is cold. Bring the light to them.
