Blankets and Batter Winter Drive

November is when the street stops forgiving. The nights drop towards freezing, the rain comes sideways, and hypothermia stops being a word and becomes a weekly risk. Food keeps people alive; warmth keeps people alive longer. This week the kitchen pairs the two: every hot jiangxiang bing served with the offer of a winter kit - a proper fleece blanket, an insulated thermos, and a pair of thick socks, the three items the regulars themselves asked for. Each £8 entry funds exactly one complete kit, handed over the counter with the meal, no questions, no forms, no queue-jumping for the photogenic. This week's target is 150 kits - one for every regular on the route - so that nobody Mr Tang feeds daily goes into the first freeze without them. At Saturday's session we kit up the cart on camera, hear from the volunteer who does the night rounds delivering kits to the people who never come to the cart, and open the giant tally board: blanket by blanket, kit by kit, name by name on the wall. A jiangxiang bing is warm for five minutes. A blanket is warm all night. Give the night.
