Hygiene and Dignity Pack Saturday
Hunger is the visible hardship, but the one the street mentions most quietly is hygiene. A man who cannot wash before a job interview does not get the job. A woman managing her period on the street without supplies is a monthly crisis nobody sees. Broken teeth, unwashed clothes, feet in wet shoes for weeks - these are the indignities that convince people they have stopped counting. This week's drive funds dignity packs, assembled by volunteers and handed out with the food: soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, shaving kit, sanitary products, clean socks, wet wipes and a laundry voucher for the local wash-house. One pack costs £7 to assemble - exactly one entry - and this week's target is 400 packs, enough for every person on the kitchen's regular route plus a reserve for the shelters. At the session we run a packing line live on camera: your names read out as the packs are sealed, one per entry, in real time. We also hear from a former regular of the queue who got hired after his first clean-shirt interview - his account of what a toothbrush can change. Dignity is not a luxury. It is the first rung back up. Fund the rung.
