Winter Shelter Hot Suppers
December's cold snaps fill the emergency shelters to the door, and a shelter bed without a hot supper is half a mercy. This week the kitchen goes indoors: every evening of the week, Mr Tang and the volunteers serve hot supper at the winter shelters - a steaming bowl of soup followed by a fresh jiangxiang bing with sugar and lemon, the simple hot-sweet finish that the regulars request by name. The economics of a shelter supper are beautifully direct: £6 funds five complete hot suppers - five bowls, five jiangxiang bing, five people going to their bunks warm instead of hungry. The week's target is 1,750 suppers across the shelter circuit, with the pot count posted on the shelter doors each morning. At Saturday's session we ladle from the first pot of the season live on camera, hear from the shelter manager who has watched men sleep easier after a hot meal than after any briefing, and open the season's supper wall - every £6 lights a bowl on it. A bunk and a full stomach is the difference between enduring the night and being destroyed by it. Fill the bowls.
