There is a moment in these cases - the consent order hearing, usually - when a man does the arithmetic on the rest of his life. The house: hers. The savings: split beyond recognition. The pension he paid into for thirty years: earmarked. The business he built before the marriage: valued, and half of it walking out the door. Anthony, 51, a groundworker from Cardiff, signed his settlement, walked out of the solicitor's office with a carrier bag, and tried to open a bank account - discovering he no longer had the ID to do it, because everything with his address on it belonged to the house that was no longer his.
