Court Watch UK - Independent Observers Fund
Family courts sit largely in private, and what is unwitnessed drifts. Our case files - hundreds of them now - describe the same drift: hearings that run on judicial impression rather than evidence, orders that depart from the written law without explanation, the same phrases recycled across unrelated cases as if precedent were a mood. A judge's discretion is lawful; an unwitnessed discretion is a different thing entirely. What is observed is defended. Court Watch UK trains independent observers to sit in the public gallery where the law allows, to take structured notes against the published practice guidance, and to file those notes with our pattern register - the only systematic record of how these hearings actually run for the men inside them. This fund covers the training, the safeguarding checks, the notebooks and the travel for the first observer cohort. Each £15 entry trains and equips one observer for a month of sittings. Tonight's target: the full first cohort of twenty, deployed across four regions from January. At the session we demonstrate the observation protocol on a reconstructed hearing, review the first patterns already visible in our register, and open the roll board - twenty seats, one per observer funded. Justice seen is justice done. Send the witnesses.
